Communicating in a Time of Crisis

Course Description: A one-hour course designed for camp directors and staff. Based on the popular books Crisis Communications Weathering the Storm and Risk Management Planning, this course covers crisis identification, key messages, and media communications. Learn how to prepare in advance by developing a Crisis Response Team and proper procedures for reporting and responding to crises. CEUs available for this course.

Length: 1 hour.

Requirements for Successful Completion: 70% or higher on multiple choice final exam.

Learning Outcomes: Learners will be able to describe categories and kinds of crises; the definition of key messages and their purpose as a goal of communication; the best practices in discussing crises with parents, campers, staff, media, and the public; the concept of a communication lockdown and when such an action may be appropriate; and the importance of developing and utilizing a crisis response team.
